Join qualified Lambeth Tour Guides Adrian and Claire to explore the LGBTQ+ history of Kennington.
The tour starts near Kennington Park, which was for centuries common land used for grazing livestock, recreation and playing sports (notably cricket), but was also frequently a place for political protest. Famously, on 10 April 1848, it was the site of the Chartist rally, at which peaceful protesters, inspired by the 1848 revolution in France, gathered en masse to demand political rights for working men. The common was opened as a park in 1853 and included the Prince Consort Model Lodge.

The park continued to host gatherings, rallies and events, including four National LGBTQ+ Pride events and protests against the Thatcherite government’s repressive 1988 Clause 28 legislation.
This walk, one of a series of LGBTQ+ themed tours conducted by Adrian and Claire in Lambeth, has been designed to coincide with 2026 Pride Month. ‘We were actually there,’ they told Vauxhall History. ‘We will tell walkers about how we marched and where we partied and share some interesting queer stories about the surrounding area and old LGBTQ+ venues.’
IMPORTANT NOTE
For reasons beyond their control, the organisers have amended the date of this walk. 13 June is the correct date.
